Researchers Claim Cyberbullying is Less Harmful Than In-Person Harassment

Cyberbullying has become a prevalent and harmful trend among young people, the internet has created a space where people can say whatever they want to you and about you without the consequences of saying it in person. Certainly, cyberbullying can be emotionally and psychologically damaging to victims, but a recent study suggests the virtual form of bullying is actually less harmful than in-person harassment.

The American Psychological Association published a study that was conducted by researchers at the University of New Hampshire who collected and analyzed data from a previously study that was funded by the National Institute of Justice. The study found that more than half of all bullying takes place in person, while only about 15 percent involved technology only, but 31 percent of all bullying cases involved a combination of both.

Researchers claim that internet only bullying was less likely to result in physical injury and did not involve the same kind of power struggles as in-person confrontations. However, Skout representatives point out that if someone used both technology and in-person harassment to bully somebody then the results were much more likely to be severe and damaging to the victim, even involving physical violence in many cases.

The truth is, all forms of bullying are harmful and indicate there could be larger issues at hand. Whether it’s a virtual or real life threat, bullying can cause serious psychological consequences in those who are on the receiving end of it.
